Can I become a Nurse with a Masters in English Literature?

Your Question:
I have an opportunity in a nursing and rehab home close to my house to take a CNA (certified nursing assistant) course which is free. There will be hands on training ,a test at the end and possibly employment. I have a Masters in English Literature. I want to do this CNA course and see if nursing is for me. I have always been a stay at home mom and am forced to work to raise my four kids being widowed. Am I doing the right thing? If I like nursing would the accelerated 15 month program you talk about be the one I should think of. I need to work to raise my kids and don't have time for long drawn 4 year programs. I chose this CNA course because its free and also have heard that health care has more job opportunities. Help.

My Answer:

I think the fact that you are taking the free opportunity to do a CNA course is a great idea! Free is always good and I do believe it is important to get a glimpse into the nursing life before you take the plunge into a program. Take note of what the nurses are doing while you train because the jobs of CNA and RN can be very different.

It does seem like the accelerated BSN program may be the best fit for you. Look into colleges around your area and see if they offer that particular program. If they do, get in touch with them directly.

As your background is in English and not a science of some sort, you may find you will still need some prerequisites in addition to the program itself. Some types of prerequisites include chemistry, statistics, anatomy and physiology etc. You will just need to check with the program you are interested in to see what they require.

I am not sure how old your children are now, but once you finish the program, the nursing career is great for kids. You can move your schedule around to anything that fits your life. I know many moms who work weekend nights because it is easier to find help on weekend days than any other time.

From the sounds of your story, you have fought hard in your life and I have no doubt that you could make this work for you also. The program itself would be very tough, but I do believe it would be worth it in the end. Good Luck in your decision.
