Do Male Nurses
have trouble finding jobs?
by Daniel

Your Question: Obviously there are more female nurses than male nurses. I am 16 going into my senior and I am certain I want to be an RN. But because I am a male would that effect me in getting a job later when I earn my degree?
Your Answer: Hi Daniel,
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, women still outnumber men 15 to 1 in the nursing profession as of 2008. However, the survey mentions that if you look at just those who became nurses after 1990, the stats change to 10 women for every 1 man. So yes, you will still be well outnumbered as a male nurse.
This does not mean you will be discriminated against however when it comes to finding a job. As of now, August 2010,
all new graduates are having trouble finding a job. The economy is rough for everyone, including hospitals, and therefore hiring and paying to orient brand new nurses is an expense many hospitals are having trouble absorbing.
Make sure you do everything you can to stand out. Get great grades, sign up for any internships or fellowships your university offers, and be professional at your interview.
You can also make sure your
nurse resume is in tip top shape.
Hope that helps!
