Have a Failed NCLEX?
Now what?

First of all it is not the end of the world if you have a failed NCLEX. I know, it is terrifying and no one ever really talks about what to do next. That is what I am here to do for you. Please understand that you are not alone. The pass rate for both the NCLEX-RN and the NCLEX-PN have only been between 69% and 88% since 2005 (NCSBN-NCLEX fact sheets). Now, stand up, regroup, and make a plan.

Girl Crying after Failed NCLEX

Remember that you now have time to prepare if you have a failed NCLEX. The minimum time you must wait to re-take the NCLEX is usually 45 days. At the time this article was written in 2008, there were four states that require you to wait 90 days. Just check with your state’s nursing board for their rules. Think about it this way, you now have a 1.5 month break before you have to take your next nursing exam. You never got that much study time in school!

Okay, time to study. If you fail, you will receive a report from the examiners telling you what your strengths and weaknesses were on the NCLEX. It is called a Candidate Performance Report (CPR) and it is FABULOUS! Now you know WHERE to focus on studying. You know longer have to go into this blind and not knowing where to center your attention! I promise, NOBODY wants you to fail. This is why you are given this extremely valuable information. So please, for all that is good, USE IT!

If you do fail, please do not panic. Start studying! Use the Candidate Performance Report as your personalized study guide. DO NOT OVERSTUDY, just study consistently. If you have to drop the money for another preparation class, consider it money well spent. You will get your money’s worth once you start working as and RN or LPN. Good Luck!
