Nursing Can Cause Back Pain
Your Question:I have a weak lower back that is easily aggravated if I lift or pull carelessly. Would nursing only complicate my back problem further?
My Answer:Dee--Thanks for writing in. I wish I had a better answer for you, but unfortunately the answer is yes, pulling carelessly can aggravate the pain in a weak lower back. The thing is ,however, that you can pull carelessly not only in nursing, but in a lot of other careers. I don't think it is a reason not to go into nursing.
I have hurt my back before in this field. I have also learned how to do my job smarter, not harder, in order to avoid this. Things like asking for help with EVERY lift and having two nurses with every stand until I am sure a patient can support themselves.
Nursing school teaches you about egronomics (setting up your workplace safely for YOU) and you can be sure that your place of employment will emphasize what you have also learned. The more you get hurt, the more it will cost them.
Have you considered doing exercises to strengthen your back muscles?? Maybe some pilates or yoga classes, or even seeing a chiropractor for some tips on correcting your posture that will in turn strengthen your back. I have started paying particular attention to both my abdominal muscles and my back (you have to do both!) and have noticed a vast improvement.
Also, if you are unlucky enough to have a chronically "bad back"...don't count out nursing. You may not want to dive into post-surgical nursing, but may find your spot in pediatrics where the patients are lighter and usually pretty independent with moving around...or maybe even a clinical office would suit you well
Good Luck Dee and let us know what you decide!
