Avoid Job Burnout
A Review for Nurses Especially

You need to know how to avoid job burnout as a nurse.

I know what you are thinking, “great, I came to a site to learn about becoming a nurse and all you gave me was how I will hate this career”. Relax, I am not saying that you will hate nursing. This profession is extremely rewarding, and it is recession-proof, and it is flexible, and it is always something new, but it is emotionally and physically taxing. Hey, it comes with the territory. Here are the ways you can help avoid and fix job burnout. I recommend using these strategies as soon as you see the signs of job burnout.

Nurses must remember to take care of themselves. How you do that is up to you and your personality. If you are a spa-loving person you should treat yourself to a massage every few months or so. If you are an exercise nut you should join a gym and go on your days off. If you de-stress by doing crafts, then head right over to A.C. Moore of Michaels on your days off. Having something to do outside of the job will help you have something to look forward too. If works is rough one week, having nothing else to focus on will only make it worse.

Why not plan a trip? Even if it is only a weekend getaway, you will be amazed how much it can help. I do this when I am starting to feel stifled. Not only does it give me something to look forward to, it also relaxes me enough to bring my work life back to normal. Personally I am a vacation junkie.

Consider taking a mental health day, you know, call out!I am not saying skip work once a month, or even once every two months. However, if you have had two hard days that have brought you to tears (it happens!) then call out on your third day. Just stay home, veg out and relax. Everyone needs a mental health day now and again. You will be recharged and ready on your next day.

If you find none of the above is changing your perspective, than change your job. Nursing is versatile, take advantage of that. Too many nurses move on to new careers because one or two places were not their fit. Don’t do that. There are many types of nurses. Keep moving around from place to place until you find what is right for you.

You have to be able to avoid job burnout as a nurse. Know yourself first. If you are not happy, do something about it. Don’t forget, you can always look into getting your masters degree if you want more of a challenge.
