NCLEX Tips: Relaxing and Waiting for the Big Test

Everyone needs some NCLEX tips—EVERYONE! If you are here looking for advice on how and what to study, you are in the wrong place.

This page is just some general advice from experienced “NCLEXERS”. Look here when you have a week to go before your test day, you are thoroughly prepared, and now just waiting for the day to arrive and just want a few NCLEX tips to get you through!

One week prior—NCLEX Tips

  • Make sure you are getting 8 hours of sleep every night for the whole week prior to the test.

  • DO NOT over study at this point. Review 1-2 hours per day. Don’t psych yourself out with what you don’t know. It is impossible to know everything.

  • Go to a movie. This will help you relax by letting your mind think about something else for a little while.

  • DO NOT call and ask more than 2 friends who their test went. Everyone is a little curious, but sometimes too much information can give you un-needed stress.

  • Drive to the test center, if feasible, so you know how long it should take you to get there. Don’t forget to consider traffic at the time of day your test is

Test Taking Anxiety Tips

NCLEX Tips for the Night Before your Test

  • Print directions to the test center and put the phone number to the test center on those directions. Better safe than sorry

  • DO NOT study. You either know it or you don’t by this point. Over studying will just give you test taking anxiety.

  • Again, plan on getting a full 8 hours of sleep

  • Set both your alarm clock and cell phone for the morning. You could also ask someone who is always up to call and make sure you are up on time. You will sleep better if you know there is no possible way for you to sleep in and be late.

How to relax during NCLEX

NCLEX Tips for that Stressful Day

  • Eat a good-size, healthy breakfast

  • DO NOT take any study guides, flashcards etc with you. They are banned in the testing buildings

  • Make sure and take the following
    • A non-expired, signed in English, Drivers License, State Identification, or Passport. If you are taking the NCLEX outside of the USA, you must have a passport for identification.
    • Your ATT (Authorization to Test)
    • Some sort of small snack. You can’t take it in the testing room, but you might enjoy this at your break

  • Just know that they will fingerprint you and photograph you at the test center that morning.

  • Pay attention to yourself only. Focus grasshopper. Who cares about how fast the girl next to you got in and out of there.

  • If you get stuck on a question because you know how the “real world” is --STOP. Remember the NCLEX is “by the book”. What would theory tell you to do. Then answer the question and MOVE ON. Don’t dwell
After you have finished taking the exam, go and relax. Go get a bite to eat with a friend, take a walk, workout, or do whatever it is that relaxes you. The test is done and there is nothing else you can do about it at this point. It is ok to STOP thinking about nursing for a while. Congrats on finishing! I hope these NCLEX tips will help you get through your big day.
