The Nurse Licensure Compact 24 States---1 License
You may have heard of the Nurse Licensure Compact. It is also commonly referred to as the multi-state license.
There are 24 states (as of December 2010) that have joined together and said that basically if it is good enough for them, it is good enough for us.The states that are currently involved are
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Colorado
- Delaware
- Idaho
- Iowa
- Kentucky
- Maine
- Maryland
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Hampshire
- New Mexico
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- South Dakota
- Tennessee
- Texas
- Utah
- Virginia
- Wisconsin
The idea of a multi-state nurse license was shaped in January 2000 and has slowly added more and more states to the participating list. Each of these participating boards of nursing must adhere to set regulation and rules when licensing nurses. Click here to see the regulations set forth by the Nurse Licensure compact. In the very basic of terms, here is what you need to know. - You must be a primary resident in the state in which you apply for your license.
- When you get your license in one of these states, you automatically get the compact benefits. You don’t need to do anything else!
- As long as your nurse license is not under review or probation (for something such as drug abuse), you can work in any of these 24 states with your state license. You won’t need to apply for anything when you go to work.
- You will still need to renew your license as is required by your individual state board of nursing.
On a personal note, I love the Nursing Licensure Compact. I think it shows a level of professional accountability across state lines that we are missing sometimes. Not to mention it is a great bang for your buck too! You pay to get licensed in one state and then can move across almost half the country without thinking any more about it. If you are interested in travel nursing this may be very attractive to you.
