Writing your
Nurse Resume

It is never too early to start working on your nurse resume. Whether you are filling out an online application, or handing in your paperwork personally to human resources, chances are you will need this type of document. So what do you need on a nurse resume? There are some things you must include, and some that will help make your name stand out to potential nurse managers.

The following list includes those items you must have on your resume. They are basics to most all resumes.
  1. Your Name!!!--Yes this seems obvious, but it should be at the top and followed by
  2. Your Contact Info!!!--This includes your phone number and email address that you regularly check. I include my address also, but not everyone does.
  3. Your Relevant Educational Background--As there are so many ways to become a nurse, make sure and let them know what kind of nurse you are. Did you get your associates, than add on your BSN? This is where you get to show off that you have two degrees. Include the school name and year(s) you graduated.
  4. Your Work Experience--If you have healthcare experience, include all these jobs. If you are a new nurse, list your 3 most recent jobs or the one that you have had for years which shows loyalty.
  5. Your References--List 3 people (not friends or family) who can vouch for you. These should be teachers, previous employers, co-workers etc.

The following items will help your nurse resume stand out in a crowd!
  1. Professional Organizations--Are you a member on the ANA? Make sure and add that to show your professionalism.
  2. Volunteer Work--Do you help with Meal on Wheels or take blood pressures for your church every now and again? This section makes your resume look good regardless of your career choice. Click here for volunteer ideas
  3. Your Objective--An objective statement is optional, but clearly states what it is your are looking for.
  4. Previous Leadership Positions--This may be with a previous nursing job, or maybe something you did in college. Managers like to see leaders interested in working for them.
