Where do I start with
Nursing Schools??

Choosing between all the nursing schools can be so overwhelming, but don’t worry. With a little research, you will soon be able to pick out the one for you.

First of all you need to decide what type of nurse education you want to get. Then look for schools near you with that type of nursing education to start the ball rolling!

Nursing School Decisons

Nursing schools have become notorious in the last few years for not having any open room. Some schools have waiting list that are a few years long. I don’t want to discourage you. I just want to give you a heads up. Be prepared to have to wait to get into school, even if you are the perfect nursing candidate. If you are willing to move around in order to get into school faster, then you may want to check out this list of nursing schools, which have no waiting list.

Once you have decided on a few schools that fit your educational goals, you need to contact those nursing schools directly, or at least check their website and read it thoroughly. There are many schools that are now requiring you come to an information session before you can even apply to school. Not only are these sessions required for some schools, but you will get invaluable information on what to expect at that particular school. Applying to college is time consuming. There is no way around that, sorry. Before you start anything, go ahead and get your background information together. Some of these things would include

  • All your educational transcripts—Go ahead and order one for yourself to make sure that everything is correct on them all. The ones for the actual application will have to be sent directly to the schools.
  • All of your pertinent work history. Some schools want this and some don’t.
  • If you have moved a lot recently, figure out your list of addresses. Zip Codes can be hard to remember.
  • Start thinking about the essay you will most likely have to write. While the specific topic will be on your application, it will probably have something to do with why you want to get into nursing.
  • How you are going to pay for it? All nursing schools cost money, so knowing how to tackle this obstacle is something you will have to deal with at some point. Luckily nursing is a career that will always pay you back for the school you pay for.

There are many reasons a school may be good or bad for you. Look at everything. Obviously money will be a big issue, so make sure you know how much tuition AND fees will be for the duration of the program.

Also, make note of how big each class size is. Do you want 20 people or 90 people in class with you? Also ask how big the clinical classes are as this is where you will get most of your hands on learning.

Be sure and check out the school’s NCLEX pass rate. The NCLEX is the test you must past to actually become a nurse. If a school has a good pass rate they will be happy to show it to you. This is usually a good indicator of how prepared you are when you leave school.

After researching all of your nursing schools, narrow the list to 3-5 top choices. Applying to schools cost money too, so remember that when narrowing your list. If you feel better applying to 10 different nursing colleges, than go for it. Just remember that will cost you upwards of $1000! Good luck and don't give up.
