Top Ten Signs of Burnout
There are tell-tell signs of burnout in any profession. Nurses are prone to burnout due to the very nature of their work. Nursing, while rewarding, can also be one of the most physically and emotionally taxing careers you can choose. Here is my list of top ten signs YOU have burnout.
- You dread going to work- everyday!
- You are cynical and bitter at work. You down every new idea that comes along.
- You are constantly searching for a new job within nursing- such as a new floor or clinic or hospital.
- You become unhappy at home. We spend so much time of our lives at work, it is no wonder our feelings at work spill into our personal lives.
- You are always tired. Emotional burnout does have an effect on your physically.
- You lose patience at work much more quickly than normal- with everyone from your patients to your co-workers.
- You are sick more often- including colds, headaches and overall muscle soreness
- You develop insomnia, or if you have it already, it gets worse.
- Becoming less productive at work. Always “feeling behind” when that never seemed to happen before.
- and most obviously- you start looking for a whole new career and second guessing your decision to become a nurse in the first place.
The signs of burnout usually come on slowly over a period of months or years. In my experience, those around you will identify your burnout before you do! In my case, my husband kept saying to me “well change something than, you NEED to be happy.”They say the definition of insane is doing nothing different and expecting different results. Nurses, at least in this aspect, are insane. We keep just hoping that “it will get better”. If you want to avoid nurse burnout, you need to change your game plan!
