Volunteer Ideas
Helping your Scholarship Application

Many people are looking for volunteer ideas. That is because volunteer work is a popular question on many scholarship applications. Most people have volunteered and just aren’t thinking about it.

Maybe you have done some stuff you are not counting.

  • Do you give blood?
  • Do you babysit your neighbor’s kid a few days a week for just an hour so she, a single mother, can get home from work without leaving her son home alone?
  • Have you ever walked in any fundraising event or given money to a walker?
  • Have you called into a radio-thon and donated money?

See you have volunteered. Now you just need to know how to word it perfectly. Using the above examples, here are my suggestions on wording for your scholarship application:

  • Support the American Red Cross on a weekly/monthly/bi-monthly basis through blood donations
  • Assist single mother with free childcare on weekly basis
  • Team walker in Relay for Life raising $500 for cancer research
  • Monetary donation for Make a Wish Foundation

Volunteer Ideas

If you can’t think of anything you have done that can be classified as volunteer work, then go do something today. The Red Cross ALWAYS needs blood and monetary donations are always appreciated with medical research groups. Volunteer work is the easiest thing you can beef up before applying for a scholarship. Volunteer work will make you feel good too, so just go out there and find someone to help.

Here are even more volunteer ideas that may not necessarily pertain to nursing:

  1. Work in an animal shelter
  2. Become a big brother/sister
  3. Work in a summer camp
  4. Pick up trash for an adopt-a-highway group
  5. Go to a nursing home weekly and visit patients
  6. Mission Trips
  7. Habitat for Humanity
  8. Serve at Food Banks
  9. Organize a food Drive
  10. Walk in a Heart Walk or Relay for Life or MS Walk
  11. Teach a child to swim for free
  12. Ronald McDonald House volunteering
  13. Be a candystripper
  14. Mow a less fortunate neighbor's yard
  15. I could really go on and on and on and on
